Progeos Case Study:

Map and Geographic Information Center at the University of Connecticut Homer Babbidge Library

The University of Connecticut's Homer Babbidge Library Map and Geographic Information Center (MAGIC) has one of the largest collections of maps and geospatial data in New England. With a growing collection of georeferenced historical maps and an active user base MAGIC knew it had to improve its online access.

Progeos now hosts and publishes several hundred gigabytes of MAGIC's geospatial data including Connecticut historical aerial photography, historical maps and topographic maps through its Cadcorp GeognoSIS Server. This enables MAGIC to provide their georeferenced historical maps and aerial photography across several mediums including in their online mapping tools in Google Maps and for use in ArcGIS.

MAGIC's online mapping site, www.econmap.com, (hosted and developed by Progeos) has several thousand hits a month and has greatly expanded the accessibility of MAGIC's collection to students, faculty, staff and the public. In close to a year of activity, www.econmap.com has been used by over 10,000 unique visitors and over 3,000 maps have been printed from the site. Popular mash-up pages include the 1934 Connecticut Aerial Photography and a growing number of GIS users are accessing MAGIC's web mapping service. In less than a year Progeos and MAGIC have drastically improved the user experience at MAGIC.

MAGIC's growing digital collections are now easily available to users of all interest and ability levels, generating new interest, research and discovery.
